Flying Squirrels
The woods at our Quechee nature center are home to a population of flying squirrels. We encountered three individuals during the small mammal trapping portion of our tick ecology project this summer and observed several others while reviewing video from our camera trapping throughout the year.
All of our encounter data was submitted to the New England Flying Squirrel network, a community science project focusing on the distribution of flying squirrels throughout our region. This winter we will install nest boxes in the woods and continue monitoring their population. Next summer we will add them as a target species during our mammal trapping and record more data if we encounter them again.
